Free Stuff

Free music on the web,
free music on the web...

Oh, hi... ok, I'll stop singing...

This is not an exhaustive page. given the 53,000,000 sites, legal and otherwise, that have something to do with free music... You'll just have to google it if you don't see what you want here.

This page is for those looking for legal free music. Those wanting to rip off the artists (eg: swiping the latest Metallica or Eminimeneminem CD...) can go elsewhere.

Many of these sites don't add any explanations to what they're about, probably because I'm clueless..., but with a little poking about you'll find what you want. Some of these sites are ad supported, like TV, others have upgrades to their service, such as Yahoo. The upgrade generally gives lots of benefits, but the free stuff is still good.

Legal Music Downloads

Years ago, Napster came along, and changed the face of music. In its first incarnation, Napster was where many Internet users logged on to download music absolutely free of charge. Things are different now, and Napster has been revamped. Each song now costs you money, but they are known for being a place for legal music download. Napster was free when it was first born, but any song downloaded was not a legal music download. File sharing of millions of songs began to anger artists who were losing money. People were not buying as many CDs, and it turn record sales slumped.

Napster was finally shut down, and many people were charged with stealing music. Many sites popped up to replace Napster, but many of the free songs were littered with spyware and viruses. Not only are these sites not legal music download sites, they often ravaged your computer. Today, those renegade sites still exist, but you should download there at your own risk. Napster has been reborn as a safe and legal music download site, and membership is free in some cases. There are restrictions on the songs you download, however. If you find free songs, you still have to pay to burn them to a CD.

Legal music download sites have become more popular, and many people don’t mind paying for the songs they want. MP3 players have made digital music and legal music downloads more popular than ever. If you are still looking for a way to get around paying for legal music download sites, you should do so at your own risk. There are many that still want to trade free music and software, but you don’t know what you are getting.

Limewire and Kaaza were once extremely popular, but songs are harder to find on these sites. Don’t be mistaken: these are not sites for legal music download. In most cases, you will receive the lovely gift of spyware, malware, and viruses with each song you download. Your antivirus and firewall may not be enough protection. When you authorize these programs to run, you cannot say which information you want to come through, and which you want to be stopped. Sometimes your antivirus will detect a file is corrupted and stop the transfer, but this isn’t always the case. To keep yourself safe from viruses and spyware, and in some cases, legal action, your best bet is to find a legal music download source and pay for music that is free of junk and complications.
